#WCW: Agbani Darego – Nigerian Model

By Faith Haruna

Today we are going to talk about a celebrity whose name has graced magazines and newspapers because of her impact in Nigeria. I am talking about none other than the beautiful Agbani Darego, the beauty queen who is a role model to many across Africa.

Agbani was born on December 22 1982 as Ibiagbanidokibubo Asenite Darego. She hails from Abonnema in Rivers State and is the sixth of eight children begotten by her parents. Her father was a customs official while her mother had a rice trading business. Her mother died of breast cancer while she was in boarding school.

She studied Computer Science for a year at the University of Port Harcourt before she ventured into beauty pageantry. In 2001, she ran for the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and emerged the winner. This made her eligible to run for Miss Universe (Miss World) in Puerto Rico. She defied all odds and became the winner of Miss World in Puerto Rico 2001.

Agbani Darego was the first black woman from Africa to win Miss World in a time when the dark skin was not celebrated. In 2002, Agbani relocated to London where she signed modeling contracts with top modeling agencies. She graced the covers of Vogue, Elle, Allure, Cosmopolitan and Essence. She has modeled for international brands like L’oreal, Christian Dior, Avon, Sephora, Target and Macy’s.

She has also judged numerous pageants like Miss England 2002, Mr. Scotland 2002, Miss World 2014 and Elite Model Look Nigeria 2012 and 2014. She currently works with Ford Models NY. In 2011, she was announced as the brand ambassador for Arik Air and Nature’s Gentle Touch.
She is a patron of breast cancer awareness and has been supportive of Dr. Kerry’s Foundation, which was created to reduce the incidence of communicable diseases in Africa. In 2013, she founded AD by Agbani Darego, a retail clothing brand.

In case you are wondering whether she is married, Agbani Darego got married to Ishaya Danjuma, son of former Defence Minister in Nigeria, Theophilus Danjuma, on the 8th of April 2017. The former beauty queen shared the news on her Instagram page with the picture showing her in a wedding dress with her partner, turning their backs to the camera.
