Its been another great year for Nigerian music and we are here with the ten Nigerian musicians that rocked our year.
10. Wande Coal
Funke! The blackest of all the devils did his thing this year! I hope everyone reading this is a Wande fan cause this man is a legend. Turkey Nla himself did not stop, Oh no no. He’s the only original Mo’Hits boy that is still running it. Wande made us love him every year like Iskaba! Iskebelete! Iskoboloto!
Soul snatching vocalist, singer and songwriter. Riding on the wave of her hit single ‘Maradona’, Niniola had a great year. After letting Sarz do magic with that song, she went on to co-own the rainy season and still stayed working for more. Before the year ended her album, ‘This is Me’. ‘Bale’ with Terry Apala and Hold Me with Patoranking are faves.
8. Small Doctor
I won’t lie, I cringed after typing in his stage name. I really don’t understand him and after that Snapchat thing and the Keke driver incident before that, I really don’t interest myself with him. However, the Kano state born artiste stayed played without my permission. ‘Penalty’ followed us to 2017 and I’m worried it’s attending cross over services for 2018. His songs ‘This Year’ and ‘Gbe fun’ are also doing good. He is not to be ignored.

7. Kiss Daniel
G-Worldwide’s front man stayed in play this year whether on his own or with other G-Worldwide artists. I felt bad bout his little legal scuffle with them as they parted ways but I know he’ll do good on his own. Recognized for his unique voice and sound, Kiss is a force in Nigerian Music today. I liked the vibe of ‘Sofa’ and will always drop to ‘Yeba’. This was a good year for him. Looking forward to them to get better in 2018.
6. Tiwa Savage
Biggest Female in Music in this country. Need I say more? From singles from that ‘SugarCane’ EP, Madam stayed winning and working. She has solidified her place amongst icons in her generation and this is fact. I imagine Don Jazzy rolling in bed about great things to do, he thinks of Tiwa, smiles and goes back to sleep. Tiwa is here to rule and show them where to go.
You are really not in this country if Simi didn’t stay in your ears somehow this year. Her beautiful voice, down-to-earth sound and stellar production skills and songwriting have skyrocketed her to the top of the charts and into our hearts and lips. Simi, whose ‘Chemistry’ with Falz is undeniable (yes this is a double entendre) ended the successful year with a self titled album. And she looks like she’s coming for more in the next year.

4. Maleek Berry
This producer turned singer and songwriter has been blessing us with waves of sound that you can truly appreciate. Who would have thought that the brain behind ‘The Matter’ would give one on the best EPs of 2016 (‘Last Daze Of Summer’, don’t question it) and continue to bless us with songs like ‘Bend It’, ‘Magic’, ‘Been Calling’ and ‘On Fire’. Berry really got the juice.
3. Burna Boy
The only one who Fela would actually bop to. Yes, the ‘Soke’ crooner, directly involved in organizing or organized crime or not, will always have the hearts of the country. Port-Hartcourt Bad Boy sends us on one hell of a trip with his singles and features this 2017. ‘Gbe Fun One Time’ starts it for me and you have to jump to ‘Gba’, ‘Chillin Chillin’, and ‘Streets of Africa’ does things to people and Burna relentlessly put out pure music. Pure blood!
OBO has had a controversial year. Notwithstanding, his questionable lyrics flood the market and he stayed winning. You know ‘Gba Gbe Oshi’ was a jam to start the year. He featured trap gods Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd on a song so you know that is money coming in. ‘If’ and ‘Fall’ lit this country’s playlists to the max. DJs finally found Superman. I really really liked his feature on Popcaan’s ‘My Story’, so old school Davido! The 30 Billion tour was proof that Davido packs a crowd and of course, MOBO recognized him as The Best African Act and that, Ladies and Gentlemen is huge.
Starboy international had a massive year! From ‘Daddy Yo’ to ‘Come Closer’ to ‘Manya’. These sounds came from all sides. His 3rd studio Album, ‘SFTOS’ was a summer vibe! I live to hear Chris Brown sing in pidgin. Wizzy has also been touring and packing these awards like it’s just Tuesday! Who would have thought one Nigerian boy would go as far as he did and stand head to head with international superstars and win? Let’s not forget the performance with Davido (apparently Wizkid knows the lyrics of ‘FIA’ better than Davido but we won’t even go there now). 2017 was legitimately Wizkid’s year.
