Day 41 – One Small Girl Like That

Good morning Crown Nation,

Guess what I did this morning? I wrote a back to school list! That’s right, slowly but surely, resumption season is creeping up on us. This also means that the Lagos Logs will soon be over. We have a couple weeks left so let’s make the best of it!

I’m gonna miss this crazy Lagos chai

Today’s log is all about one of my favorite people on earth at the moment. It just dawned on me that I’ve never told you guys about Mariam; her nickname at the office is Iya Lode. She is not the biggest fan of her nickname, which makes it more fun to call her that.

Iya Lode is one small box of energy and hilarity. She’s a fellow intern and luckily she came after my bowen buddy and Analog traveled. Working at Lagos has given me the opportunity to meet so many cool people and I honestly  believe that is the best part of working here, networking. Its important that we learn to reach outside our box and learn more than a single story of a people or a phenomenon.

The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar.

– Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The Danger Of A Single Story, TED Talks 2009

Try to expand your horizon today; say hi to someone that you would normally not, read an article from a section that you normally wouldn’t, attempt to understand something foreign. You can never tell what you may find. Be adventurous today! Till out next adventure, keep your crowns up.

From The Lagos Side,
